What did I read (and finish) this week? Look below to find out!
American Vampire, Vol. 8 by Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque (2015) – This volume continues the run in the ‘60s and the Gray Trader/Worm arc. Skinner is still fighting the infection, but now he, Cal, and Pearl join up with the vampire hunters to infiltrate Area 51, head to space, and stop the Russians from nuking the US/the Worm. Despite how cool all that sounds, it wasn’t a great volume. Felicia, the badass head of the vampire hunters, returns but spends the whole time monologuing, everyone ends up being a traitor so it gets difficult to tell what’s going on, and the pace remained constant and slow. I like the arc, but this just wasn’t a great volume. Sad.
Breakfast Served Anytime by Sarah Combs (2014) – This book is about Kentucky teenager Gloria who’s going to a smarty pants summer camp to learn writing from a mysterious Professor X. Beyond that, I can’t tell you want it’s about because I barely made it to page 20. The writing was boring, and Gloria read like what a middle-aged woman thought a teenager should sound like, complete with too many “cool’s” and “oh, my God’s,” using the word “peck” to describe texting, railing against text-speak, and rhapsodizing about Ale-8. I really wanted to like it because Ms. Combs is a local writer, but this was just bad.
Kare no Shousou to Koi ni Tsuite by Aomoto Sari (completed) ch. 1 – 6 – This yaoi series is about Yajima, an older lawyer, who meets a younger man, Watabe, and has hot, rough sex. They’re so compatible that they form a relationship. Yajima clings to Watabe and Watabe tries to heal his broken heart. It’s kind of cute.
Lovely Complex by Nakahara Aya (completed) ch. 1 – 2.2 – Risa Koizumi is the tallest girl in class and Atsushi Otani is the shortest, so they’re always fighting. However, they end up liking each other’s friends, so they agree to work together. Along the way, they become friends (and maybe more). I never realized that I had only read the sequels to this! It’s quite cute though a bit fluffy.
Deri Pocha – Yajuu no H na Gohan – Egaki Oroshi Mana Paper Zuke by Nonomiya Chiyoko (ongoing) ch.1 – Kouta is a chubby, good-natured school boy who offers to share his lunch with the handsome Shibusawa. However, Shibusawa thinks his food – and him – are so delicious that he initiates sex. It’s kind of cute but also really aggressive. I’m not quite sure if I like it.
Hanakoi Tsurane by Natsume Isaku (ongoing) ch. 1 – 3 – Sougorou is the heir to a kabuki house, but, despite his ego, he might not be that good. His grandfather brings in his rival Gensuke to help him improve and has the two of them work together in a play as lovers. But Gensuke actually likes Sougorou. Will Sougorou return his feelings? This is actually pretty cute, and I like it. Too bad there’s not more.
Bird of Youth by Zhang Jing Mei (ongoing) ch. 1 – One day, a ghost visits a human, wanting to make him her lover. However, she is interrupted by a god bird and vows her revenge. This is a beautifully drawn but confusingly plotted story. It was so confusing that I didn’t bother to read more.
