Donald Trump is running his Presidential campaign on one core principle: he is not like all of the lying, manipulating politicians we have in Washington. He is an outsider who hasn’t been poisoned by Washington interests and is completely uninfluenced by money (since he’s financing his own campaign – sort of). People like him because he’s “honest” and “speaks his mind,” even if doing so results in hateful, misogynist, xenophobic, and childish language.
Why then did Trump state that he would have toned down the misogyny if he knew he would one day run for office?
This past week Trump had an interview with WTMJ Milwaukee radio host Charlie Sykes. One of the key points was about Trump’s misogynistic comments about women, statements he’s made about a woman only having her job because she’s beautiful, about a woman looking pretty on her knees in front of him, about women being fat pigs, etc. Trump responded by claiming that his entire life he’d been joking (except when it came to Megan Kelly) and that he’d never once meant anything hurtful. He then said, “I never knew I was going to be running for office. And you joke, and you kid and say things, but you’re not a politician so you never think anybody cares.”
As if Trump has ever thought no one cared what he had to say.
The reason Trump’s supporters should care about this is that it shows irrefutably that Trump will modify and manipulate to get what he wants. According to him, if he’d known from the beginning that he wanted to be a politician, he would have comported himself differently. He would have played lip service to all the right people. He would have schmoozed women. He would have cozied up to minorities. He would have studied law or politics or economics. He would have been different. Thus, to an extent, he regrets his past actions because they’ve made campaigning slightly harder for him. He regrets being that authentic, honest self all his supporters seem to love.
So as you go forward and continue to support Trump, remember that he’s a chameleon and a sycophant. He will lie and manipulate to get people to support him. He will say things to get a laugh or get people to pay attention to him. He is not and never has done these things to help others. He has certainly never tried to steer this country in a direction based on vision and leadership. He’s a celebrity. He’s an attention whore. And he will say or do anything to get people to pay attention to him because, even if he didn’t grow up knowing he wanted to be a politician, he’s still a liar and a manipulator.
And this is the man you want to elect President.
