Adventures in Reading – January 25 – January 31, 2016

What did I read (and finish) this week? Look below to find out!

Honey and Clover, Vol. 2 by Chica Umino (2002) – This second volume makes it clearer how much Morita and Takemoto like Hagu and goes into Hagu’s mental state a bit. Honestly, if her character could be fleshed out a little more, I’d really like this series. As is, it’s just kind of cute.

Ongoing manga:

One Piece by Oda Eiichiro (1997 – ongoing) ch. 451 – 464 – In these chapters, the gang gets the run-around on the ghost boat, first getting separated, then getting captured, and they are now involved in yet another melee. The best part was when Usopp’s pessimism actually paid off. I love it!

Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom) by Yusei Matsui (2012 – ongoing) ch. 173 – In this chapter, the students learn that they’re Koro-sensei’s biggest weakness and one of them pays the price for it.

Cherry Boy, That Girl by South Ant (ongoing) ch. 87 – In this chapter, Berry and Walnut argue. They seem to be a bit out of sync.

Kamisama Hajimemashita (Nanami’s Secret God Training/Kamisama Kiss) by Julietta Suzuki (ongoing) ch. 1 – 131.5 – This manga is about Nanami, a girl who becomes homeless through her father’s gambling problems. Fortunately, she helps a god who grants her the title of “Land God of Mikage Shrine,” thus giving her a place to live. However, she has to work with the temple’s fox familiar, Tomoe, who is not too fond of humans. During the approximately 23 volumes I read this week, a great deal happened including Nanami getting Tomoe to trust her, time travel, helping an abandoned familiar, chibi Tomoe, and love. I really, really like this series because it blends the adorable and light-hearted with the heavy and important and it has a really cool cast of characters. Nanami is actually a very relatable and admirable girl, Mizuki the snake is heart-renderingly sad, Akura-ou is surprisingly complex, and Kurama is so much more than a pop prince. There are tengu, demons, gods, foxes, magic, and quite a few bishie. My junior high heart soars reading this. I can’t wait for the next chapter to come out.
