What did I read (and finish) this week? Look below to find out!
Honey and Clover, Vol. 1 by Chica Umino (2001) – This comic is about three Tokyo art students and their interactions with fellow students Hagu and Ayu and their teacher Hanamoto. All of them struggle to find their paths in career and love while living on very meager budgets. It’s a well-drawn piece that’s cute and fun, though I dislike how Morita and Takemoto seem to fetishize and infantilize Hagu.
One Piece by Oda Eiichiro (1997 – ongoing) ch. 419 – 450 – In these chapters, the rescuing Robin arc comes to an end. Luffy finally manages to defeat Lucci, Enies Lobby gets blown to smithereens, the gang relaxes on Water Seven, and Franky joins them in a silly, silly way. Then they’re off on their next adventure – helping a skeleton man get his shadow back! I really like the series now. It’s so entertaining (And it made me cry over a dumb boat.).
Shokugeki no Soma (Food Wars!/Soma’s Cooking Battles) by Yuto Tsukuda (2012 – ongoing) ch. 151 – In this chapter, Azami unveils some more changes for the Elite Ten.
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu (Assassination Classroom) by Yusei Matsui (2012 – ongoing) ch. 172 – In this chapter, Koro-sensei gives it his all in the final battle – but it’s pretty likely that he’s going to lose.
Cherry Boy, That Girl by South Ant (ongoing) ch. 86 – Walnut returns and he and Berry quickly fall into their old pattern, much to Mandarin’s unhappiness.
Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai (Please Love the Useless Me) by Nakahara Aya (ongoing) ch. 1 – 15 – This hysterical josei manga is about Shibata Michiko, a 29-year-old woman with terrible taste in men. After financially spoiling and supporting her younger boyfriend almost lands her homeless and starving, her evil ex-boss takes her in and gives her a job running his adorable cafe of ex-delinquents. However, Shibata is determined to stand on her own and learn from her past romantic mistakes. It also features the intense and hysterical BFF Akira, who takes neither shit nor prisoners. I love this manga so much that I read it in one evening and started texting it to everyone I could think of. It is gold.
Mairunovich (Poison Mushroom) by Satao Zakuri (ongoing) – ch. 1 – 62 – This manga centers around Kinoshita Mairu, a girl who’s always been told that she was ugly and is called the “poison mushroom.” However, one day (with the encouragement of a handsome boy) she gets fed up with the abuse and decides to get back at everyone by transforming herself into a hottie. Thus begins her life of romance, heartache, self-doubt, and friendship. It’s sort of run-of-the-mill, but I really like the relationship between her and Tenyuu and hope there’s more about her friend Fuwari. It’s cute.
19 Days by Old Xian (ongoing) – ch. 1 – 148 – This Chinese comic is about the friendship between Jian Yi and Zhang Zheng Xi, which picks up after Jian Yi goes away for a few years. Yet from the very beginning, it’s obvious that Jian Yi has deep feelings for Zhang Zheng Xi, who is much rougher, aggressive, and less willing to return his affection. However, whenever Xi shows Jian Yi any kindness, it makes your heart thump. Suuuuuuper cute and silly.
Their Story by Tan Jiu (ongoing) – ch. 1 – 89 – This Chinese comic is about the burgeoning platonic and romantic relationship between Qiu Tong and Sun Jing. Sun Jing has loved Qiu Tong from afar and is trying to overcome her awkwardness and their same sex to develop a relationship while Qiu Tong values their friendship and is not yet sure if she can return her feelings. Also very cute and silly.
