Adventures in Reading — September 7 — September 13, 2015

Emotionally_Abusive_RelationshipWhat did I read (and finish) this week? Look below to find out.

The Emotionally Abusive Relationship: How to Stop Being Abused and How to Stop Abusing by Beverly Engel (2003/2006) – This book contains an insider/professional’s understanding on what makes people abuse, take abuse, and be in abusive relationships. It provides step-by-step programs for learning how to change your abusive behavior and have a better, healthier life. It was hard to read at times because it hit so close to home, but I was really impressed by how accessible, safe, and helpful the book was. I’ll be adding it to my shelf soon.

Thor, God of Thunder, Vol. 1: The God Butcher by Jason Aaron (2012) – This Thor arc features Thor at three times in his life – as a new god, the god we know him as, and an old god – as he faces off against the God Butcher Gorr, an almost omnipotent creature hell-bent on killing all gods and freeing mortals from their tyranny. It starts out pretty slow, and young Thor is incredibly irritating, but towards the end as we’re introduced to time-traveling and the stakes increase, it gets very interesting. I wouldn’t buy it, but I’m probably going to read it through my library.

The Art of the Con: the Most Notorious Fakes, Frauds, and Forgeries in the Art World by Anthony M. Amore (2015) – This book chronicles some of the more famous art frauds and forgers and teaches readers about who scams, what’s most commonly scammed, and how frauds are caught. It’s a really cool book that I found utterly fascinating. The final chapter about the Internet was the weakest of the bunch, but it was still a sound book.

Hana_Kimi_Vol_23Hana-Kimi (For You in Full Bloom) by Hisaya Nakajo (1996 – 2004) ch. 140 – 143 – Finally, Mizuki is exposed. Fortunately, her friends are sticking by her, but it’s really only a matter of time before the school takes action. Oh, the drama!

Ongoing manga series:

Shokugeki no Soma (Food Wars!/Soma’s Cooking Battles) by Yuto Tsukuda (2012 – ongoing) ch. 132 & 133 – In these chapters, we meet Erina’s super crazy father and the fastidious Seat #1. These felt a bit disjointed, but I’m excited to learn more about the crazy dad. He promises to be an epic super villain.
